No Such Thing As Barbie Perfect

In the world of modelling, there is always the obvious first-impression of the too-skinny body image. The media is the primary constructor in the way that all ages of people are comparing themselves to and scrutinizing their bodies on a daily basis. In a recent issue of Glamour it was polled that 97% of women are cruel to their bodies on a daily basis with an average of 13 criticizing thoughts towards their bodies. It is unfair and exhausting to say the least to constantly not feeling good enough, and over-analyzing our bodies. For models especially they are under the microscope on a day to day basis and are both openly praised and criticized based on physical appearance alone. But like we are always told - we are our own worst critic, however, the media doesn't help.Even the skinniest of models are retouched, photo-shopped, and evened out for the final result of a photo shoot, which gives us an end result of something that is not even achievable by the model depicted in the advertisement. These ideals are consistently attacking and re-constructing the idea of the "perfect body" and selling it to consumers who are eager to pay to achieve perfection.

A recent extreme example of this of The Hills reality star Heidi Montag, who underwent 10 plastic surgey procedures in a single day in efforts to get perfect results. However, after all had set in real consequences began to emerge for her as she felt more like "Frankenstein" than Barbie.

The Barbie doll ideal has been unconsciously (or - arguably consciously) marketed towards young girls  since it's launch in 1959. It's popularity, however, is not without it's controversies. The doll's measurements in relativity to a real woman would be 6'0 tall with a bust size of 39 inches, an 18 inch waist and 33 inch hips. This doll, although never modeled on the proportions of a real person, only adds to the pressures that both men and women face today in the continuous drive towards perfection.

This 19 year old Serbian gender-bending model is the new face of Marc Jacobs, is featured in Jean Paul Gaultier's 2011 Spring and Summer collection, and can be seen on the current covers of Dossier magazine. Andrej is becoming everyone's muse and is being labeled the "femiman" in the world of fashion entailing a select group of ambiguous-gendered models who can comfortable work in both men's and women's casting.
